Solar self-consumption for industry and businesses

  • 01

Solar self-consumption for industry and businesses

Industrial self-consumption involves installing a photovoltaic solar plant on rooftops, canopies, or ground-mounted areas to use onsite-generated energy and cover part of the company's electricity demand. ACCIONA Energía, a leading renewable energy operator with over 30 years of experience and 14.6 GW installed across 22 countries, offers this under the EPC model (client-owned asset) or as an onsite PPA (ACCIONA finances and operates the plant; the client pays only for the energy consumed).

  • 02

    What is industrial self-consumption?

Industrial photovoltaic self-consumption is the generation of solar electricity within a company's own facilities for real-time self-supply. It enables businesses to cover part of their onsite electricity demand with renewable energy, reduce grid dependency, and advance toward the decarbonization targets required by European regulations and Spain's National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC).

Asset transferred to the client. Option to settle early PPA termination. Independent O&M contract available if required.

  • 05

When to choose EPC and when to choose PPA

    EPC may be better if…

    PPA may be better if…

You have CAPEX available to invest in owned assets

You prefer to preserve CAPEX for core business

You want to capture full savings from year one

You need to decarbonize without committing investment to the solar asset

The property is a strategic asset you want to appreciate

You want a predictable, long-term energy price with no operational risk

You want to apply tax deductions on the investment

Your company has balance sheet constraints that make asset activation difficult

  • 06

Can I adopt self-consumption with no upfront investment?

Yes through an onsite PPA. ACCIONA Energía finances and operates the solar plant; the client pays only for the energy consumed at the agreed price. The asset remains ACCIONA's property throughout the contract term and is transferred to the client at maturity. This is the most common option for companies that want to decarbonize and improve cost predictability without allocating CAPEX to the solar asset.

  • 07

What maintenance does an industrial solar plant require?

Maintenance includes periodic preventive inspections, electrical verification of inverters, and production monitoring to detect performance drops. Panel cleaning may be required depending on the site. Under the PPA model, both preventive and corrective O&M are included in the contract and managed entirely by ACCIONA Energía.

From installation to microgrid: storage and smart energy management

Energy storage Integrating batteries into a photovoltaic self-consumption system allows you to:

    • Maximize the use of solar energy generated by storing surpluses for consumption outside solar hours
    • Reduce demand peaks, with a direct impact on the capacity charge in the electricity bill
    • Provide operational flexibility against grid outages or fluctuations
    • Move toward microgrid configurations with greater energy autonomy

Smart energy monitoring and management ACCIONA Energía operates CECOSE (Energy Services Control Center), available 24/7, which enables:

    • Real-time consumption monitoring and early detection of inefficiencies before they impact costs or emissions
    • Demand forecasting and deviation anticipation through energy modeling
    • Reporting for internal tracking, energy audits, and CSRD/ESG compliance
    • Integrated cybersecurity with real-time reporting

    ACCIONA Energía monitoring service figures:

    • +6,000 installations managed worldwide
    • 4,000 GWh monitored and optimized annually
    • +110,000 MWh of annual savings delivered to clients
    • +10 million m² of managed surface area
  • 09

Can I add batteries to my self-consumption installation?

Yes. Energy storage improves the use of solar energy generated by storing surpluses outside solar hours for later consumption. It also reduces demand peaks, impacting the capacity charge on the electricity bill, and provides operational flexibility. Battery sizing depends on the company's consumption profile and energy objectives.

  • 010

    How is installation performance monitored?

ACCIONA Energía operates CECOSE, a control center available 24/7 that monitors consumption and production in real time, models and forecasts demand, detects inefficiencies, and generates regular reports. This enables deviation anticipation before they impact costs or emissions, and provides the data needed for ESG reporting and the energy audits required under the EED and CSRD.

  • 011

How long does an industrial self-consumption project take?

Timelines vary depending on site complexity, installed capacity, and administrative permit resolution times. The process follows five phases: preliminary analysis, engineering and design, permitting, construction, and commissioning. The final timeline is confirmed after the site technical study.

  • 012

Does self-consumption reduce my company's carbon footprint?

Yes. Generating renewable electricity onsite reduces emissions associated with the company's electricity consumption by replacing grid energy with solar production. The impact is quantified based on annual output, the actual self-consumption percentage, and applicable emission factors. To maximize results, self-consumption is typically combined with energy monitoring and storage. Additionally, emission reductions can be certified through Energy Savings Certificates (CAEs), generating additional economic return.
